Whether you’re empty nesters seeking warmer horizons or digital nomads taking advantage of remote work flexibility, departing for an extended winter trip can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. However, as you plan your adventure, it’s crucial not to overlook the important task of safeguarding your home during your absence. Here’s a simplified to-do list to help before you embark on your journey:

1 Month Prior to Departure

  • Hire a landscaping/snow removal company
  • Hire a professional house checker service
  • Arrange for a routine HVAC maintenance visit
  • Make sure pets are up-to-date on vaccinations

1-2 Weeks Prior to Departure

  • Suspend or modify services (cable, garbage, mail, newspapers/magazines, and update package delivery address)
  • Purchase and install timers for lights & radios, surge protectors, HVAC filters
  • Replace thermostat, alarm and door batteries
  • Consume or donate all perishable items

Last Minute to Departure

  • Deep clean.  (Don’t forget often overlooked areas like the garbage disposal and coffee machine)  
  • Store or secure outdoor equipment
  • Turn off the water main
  • Set heat to around 60 degrees 
  • Double check the locks on all the doors and windows
